Miscellaneous Information
Leslie was born on 27 August 1915 at Neustadt, Ontario. His father, born in Neustadt, was a Barber, and his mother was born at Hanover, Ontario. He had two brothers Earl and Melvin and two sisters Lorna and Bernice. The schools he attended were Consort Continuation (1921-1929) and Consort High School (1929-1931) - both in Alberta. His hobby was woodwork and the sports he took part in were baseball, hockey and tennis. Between 1933 and 1934 he was working for his father F. Ruhl as a meat cutter and for F. Ainsworth 1934-1936 in the same occupation. He then worked for Swift Canadian Co., 1936-1941 also as a meat cutter. |
Leslie enlisted on 14 November 1941. After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 14 December 1943, arriving at 3 (RCAF) PRC on 22 December 1943. He then continued to 3 AFU 25 January 1944, 82 OTU 29 February 1944, 61 Base on 6 June 1944 and 428 Squadron on 8 July 1944. Sadly Leslie then lost his life on 2 November 1944. |

Operation | Dusseldorf. 992 aircraft, 19 losses- 4 of which crashed behind Allied lines (0.4%). Most of the bombing fell on the northern suburbs with more than 5000 houses being destroyed . 7 industrial premises were destroyed and 18 seriously damaged, including some important steel works. At least 678 people were killed. This was the last significant raid on Düsseldorf. |
